Have you ever tried to copy a system family from one project to another in Revit, but when you paste it into the new project, it doesn't display correctly? This happened to me recently, and I discovered that even though the two families contained system families with the exact same names, they were defined differently within the projects, so they displayed differently. Here's an easy way to make sure that system families AND their definitions are copied from one project to another.
In the project where the system family is defined correctly, in the project browser simply select the system family you want, and press CTRL-C.

Then switch over to the project you want to copy the system family into and press CTRL-V to paste it into the new project.

If the new project already has a system family with the same name, it will give you a warning that it has renamed the element by adding a 2 to the end. To avoid further conflict between projects, we recommend that you switch all elements to the new system family type, delete the old system family type, and rename the new type without the 2 so it matches the name in the original file.
Alternately, you can copy ALL families from a project by right clicking on "Families" and selecting "Save". This will save all the families from this project to a location you designate from where they can be imported into other projects.
